Fast-Paced Transfusion Decision Making

Think Fast. Transfuse Safely.

Blood Match is an interactive clinical learning game that challenges players to select the most appropriate red blood cell transfusion for each patient based on their blood group, and the blood that is currently available.

Choose appropriate blood components, manage stock wisely, and prioritise rare blood groups to keep patients safe while earning the highest score.

Designed to reinforce the principles of safe transfusion practice, the game transforms essential learning into an engaging, time-based challenge.

Play

Right blood. Right patient. Right decision.

Blood transfusion is a lifesaving intervention, but safe transfusion depends on a series of important decisions.

Different blood groups may be compatible with a patient, but that does not necessarily make them equally appropriate. Blood stocks are finite, some blood groups are particularly valuable, and individual patient circumstances can influence the most appropriate choice.

Blood Match turns these principles into an engaging clinical decision-making challenge.

Players are presented with patients requiring red blood cell transfusion and a changing supply of available blood. Their task is to decide which blood components should be allocated to which patient.

Every decision can affect what remains available for the next patient.

Why does this matter?

Blood Match is a fun and challenging education resource however it is tackling an important issue. Transfusion is a highly controlled area of healthcare, but errors can still occur.

The UK haemovigilance scheme Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) continually highlights the importance of selecting and administering the correct blood component.

In its 2025 report, the UK Serious Hazards of Transfusion (SHOT) recorded 364 incidents involving an incorrect blood component being transfused, representing 9% of all reports received that year. Of these, 105 involved the wrong component being transfused. Eight cases resulted in major morbidity.

Communication gaps, insufficient skills and knowledge, and pressures associated with workload and staffing continued to contribute to incidents.

Healthcare professionals need to understand compatibility, recognise patient-specific considerations and make appropriate decisions within the realities of available blood stock.

Learning Objectives

Players develop a practical understanding of:

  • Red blood cell compatibility.
  • Safe blood component selection.
  • The importance of conserving rare blood types.
  • Clinical decision-making under time pressure.
  • Preventing avoidable transfusion errors.

Suitable for individual learning, the game provides a fun and memorable way to build confidence, strengthen clinical decision-making skills, and reinforce safe transfusion practice. Through interactive challenges, players can apply their knowledge, develop a deeper understanding of red blood cell transfusion, and improve their ability to make safe and effective transfusion choices.

A global learning resource

ABO and RhD blood-group principles provide an internationally recognised foundation for the Blood Match making it a flexible learning resource for healthcare education. The core game focuses on universal principles of red blood cell transfusion and appropriate selection. Including multi choice questions to support learning.

Potential uses include:

  • Medical and nursing education
  • Biomedical science and laboratory education
  • Healthcare professional induction and training
  • Blood transfusion education programmes
  • Simulation and clinical skills sessions
  • University and healthcare organisation training
  • Continuing professional development (CPD) programmes

Who Created the Game?

Ria Chaloner

Ria is a Clinical Skills and Simulation Tutor at the University of South Wales, teaching pre-registration healthcare students across nursing, midwifery, operating department practice, physiotherapy and occupational therapy. Her clinical background is as an Operating Department Practitioner specialising in anaesthetic practice. With a passion for healthcare education, simulation and innovative ways to help students apply knowledge confidently in clinical practice.

The idea for Blood Match came from a simple observation: blood transfusion compatibility is important, but can be surprisingly difficult for learners to understand and retain.

Red blood cell transfusion compatibility is fundamental healthcare knowledge. As incorrect transfusions can have serious consequences, healthcare professionals need to understand the principles of compatibility and apply them in clinical situations. Understanding the ABO and Rh blood group systems and red blood cell compatibility is therefore essential for healthcare professionals who may encounter transfusion practice during their careers.
